Some Practical Points in Soul-Winning From the Gospel of John
Please read John 4:1-26 first.
1) Jesus used an illustration based on a practical application of that which was close at hand
a. The well of water was Jesus’ tool
b. Yours may be an elevator (consider the elevator in the following points)
You meet an individual in an elevator and with humility realize that this is an opportunity for you to share Christ.
2) Jesus realized the common ground he shared with the woman at the well in needing water to assuage his thirst
a. This was a point of practical honesty putting the soul-winner and the soul to be won on common ground
b. Re: the elevator your need is to go up or down
You mention in kindness and possible humor how wonderful it is to have such needs so readily met.
3) Jesus demonstrated a personal interest in this Samaritan woman
a. Regardless of the fact that the Jews and the Samaritans were at odds over doctrinal, geographical, and cultural reasons Jesus did not let this prevent Him from understanding that this woman was a soul in need
b. Showing personal interest in the life of the person on the elevator will reveal something of that individual’s heart
Prayerfully ask that question (or make the statement) the Lord lays on your heart. It may be, “I hope you will be able to enjoy the beautiful day.” Or, “I don’t know if you follow sports but those Olympic opening ceremonies really had me amazed.” Or, “Are you visiting the city or do you live here?”
4) Jesus made the practical application carry over into spiritual truth
a. Though water would serve the immediate needs of Himself and this woman, there was a water that would meet her eternal needs.
b. An elevator transports us in an earthly environment but we need heavenly transport as well.
A possible ‘elevator application’ could be, “I often think how that one day that elevator door will open and I will step out onto the clouds of heaven and see the face of Jesus.” Or, “You know, we use this elevator to meet our need to go up and down in this building, but have you ever considered how you will get into heaven. I don’t think this elevator goes that high.”
5) Jesus was not afraid to be honestly personal with the woman even though she did not know who He was.
a. Jesus began with the innocent lead, “Go, call thy husband, and come hither.” (vs. 16) Jesus knew this would lead her into realizing her own personal sinfulness, opening her to consider her need for salvation.
b. Though Jesus knew the personal details of this woman’s life because He was/is God (cf. Jn.1:48) there are things you know about this individuals life due to your knowledge of the Scriptures
You may say to the person on the elevator, “I’m not wanting to pry into the specifics of your life but can you think of anything that might keep you out of heaven?”
6) Jesus continued to build on biblical doctrine, giving truth to this woman which would speak to the convictions of her heart
a. For the woman Jesus could speak of the practical difference between the worship of the Jews and the Samaritans and point out that though their style of worship was different God’s demands were equal to all men
b. Regardless of the huge differences between you and this new acquaintance you have certain things in common
You may say, “You know the Bible says that all men and women will be called to give an account of their actions in life. God’s basis for judging those actions is whether or not they were done in Christ. Has anyone ever explained to you from the Scriptures what God has done for you through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ?”
7) Jesus would leave certain truths with this woman that she would consider in her own time. Even as she returned to the city she was realizing that Jesus could meet the needs of her friends and countrymen as well
a. As a result many folks followed her back to Jesus
b. You may or may not have continued contact with this individual and you may never know what final impact your discussion will have
You should have a Bible tract ready to hand to the person along with the contact information for your church and your own personal phone number as well. It may be that this person will agree to meet you for coffee so you can explain more completely the biblical plan of salvation. You may also ask if they would mind if you contacted a church in their area on their behalf or if they would like you to direct them to one.
Note: Realize that you will meet people in many places of opportunity. It won’t always be on an elevator. It may be at the market or a telemarketer on your phone. Be ready in prayer to be used of God. He will direct your words as you trust Him. “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.” (Prov. 16:3)
